Discover the journey
The Annapurna Massif, stretching approximately 55 kilometers, comprises a collection of over 30 mountain peaks, including notable summits like Annapurna I, II, III, IV, and Gangapurna. Standing tall as the highest peak in the massif, Annapurna I reaches an elevation of 8091 meters, securing its position as the tenth highest mountain globally. The region boasts over 16 peaks surpassing 7000 meters and approximately 13 peaks exceeding 6000 meters in height. Annapurna I is renowned for its treacherous nature, earning a reputation as one of the most perilous mountains to climb, following in the footsteps of Kanchenjunga and K2. The ascent of Annapurna presents formidable challenges, including steep climbs, traversing glaciers, and navigating the constant risk of avalanches, often necessitating the use of fixed ropes for safety. The hostile conditions expose climbers to severe frostbite and gangrene, amplifying the inherent dangers of the climb. In 1950, Annapurna I witnessed its first successful ascent via the Southeast ridge by a French expedition led by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, among others, marking a historic milestone in mountaineering. Subsequently, in 1970, a British expedition led by Chris Bonington achieved the remarkable feat of scaling the daunting south face of Annapurna, further cementing its reputation as a formidable yet alluring challenge for mountaineers.
