Constructed in 1629 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it is often recognized as the first Dzong built in Bhutan and acts as a gateway to the Thimphu Valley. The name Simtokha is derived from "Sinmo" (demoness) and "do" (stone), and the site is believed to have been chosen to guard against a demon that was said to have vanished into the nearby rock.
